MONDAY-15/10/2007-PUTERI VOTERS HAVE REGISTERED

PAPAR: About 95 percent of Puteri Umno members who are eligible to vote nationwide have already registered in preparation for the coming elections, said national vice chief Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin. She said while they are still in the midst of updating their membership records up till September this year, this will account for roughly over 100,000 voters across the country. “We are now looking at a small percentage left who have yet to register. The problem is locating them because these are mostly young women who are working outside of the areas where they are registered,” she told reporters at her Hari Raya open house here yesterday. “We have around 330,000 members nationwide between the ages of 18 and 35 and we still need to separate those who are eligible and who are not yet eligible to vote we will have a look at the data after Hari Raya and update our records up till September.” When asked about Puteri Unmo’s position and level of acceptance in Umno, where it is the newest wing in the party, Rosnah said the wing has been accepted “in principle”. “This is a normal thing, especially in politics where new things have a problem in gaining acceptance when you first start out but it has now been six years and I believe in principle we have been accepted at all levels of the party,” she said. On their preparations for the coming elections, Rosnah noted that Puteri Umno’s stand is to focus on the party’s preparations and will leave it to the party leadership to decide if there will be among the Puteri Umno ranks who will be chosen to contest. “We are thankful we have four representatives from PuteriUmno, two as assemblywomen, one senator and myself as an MP, but the elections are coming close. “What is important is not to ask for seats but to just focus on the work •.. we must help Umno defends its current seats and also win more BN (Barisan Nasional) seats in future,” she said.

MONDAY-15/10/2007-PRESERVATION OF THE KADAZANDUSUN LANGUAGE

KIULU: Realising the importance of preserving the Kadazandusun language, the UPKO divisional Komulakan movement will be setting up a resource centre for the language here.
Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau said the centre will not only collect and keep information about the language, it will also archive stories and folk tales of the Kadazandusun community. Madius, who is also UPKO Kiulu chief, said staff of the resource centre will be going down to the villages to talk to the elderly Kadazandusun folks and making audio tapes of all the folk tales. The stories will be narrated by those who know them and the stories are not just fairy tales as they all have moral lessons behind them, he added. “These tapes will then be kept at the resource centre and those who wish to learn more about the folk lores can come here and use the facilities,” he said here. According to him, those interested to learn more about the Kadazandusun language can also come to the centre and seek assistance from the personnel there to get more information. Madius also pointed out that in the annual story telling competition in the Kadazandusun language, participants have been known to recycle materials as they have no new materials to use. “They can now come to the centre to get new materials for the competition,” he said adding that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Bernard Dompok who is also UPKO president has given his approval to the setting up of the resource centre. Dompok, he added, has also given his assurance that he would source out allocation for the setting up of the centre as the former agrees that it is a very good move by the UPKO Kiulu Komulakan movement. Madius also said that UPKO will continue its struggles to give prestige to the Kadazandusun language in accordance to the aim of its previous leaders. “Much has been done towards the preservation of the Kadazandusun language such as the setting up of the Kadazandusun Language Foundation.
“UPKO president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok’s hard work has resulted in the language being taught in schools but there are many challenges that are ahead of us among which is the number of schools teaching the language decreased in 2005 as the number of pupils taking Kadazandusun in schools had also dropped,” he said. Madius also said the Kadazandusun language is also taught in lower secondary in some schools and there is a proposal for the language to be taught in Form 4 and 5. “For this proposal to be successful, the Education Ministry needs the support of the rakyat,” he said, adding that the Education Ministry is now waiting for proposals and feedback on the matter.

KOTA KINABALU: A survey on the performance of all elected representatives in Sabah on matters relating to the development is to be carried out after Hari Raya and a full report will be prepared for the Prime Minister. The survey to be undertaken by the Sabah Consumers Association (CASH) seeks to assess how the various MPs and Assemblymen performed over the years since the last general election in 2004. Cash President Datuk Patrick Sindu, said the Association had already identified a consumers’ list from the grassroots in order for it to carry out a survey which will take place over a period until December. “We want to assist the Government in assessing the performance of the State Assemblymen and MPs. We do not want to just depend on information from political leaders only. “We want to listen to the views of the, public at the grassroots level and identify the leaders who are popular with the people and thrust them forward for the coming elections,” Patrick. said. Sabah, the second largest state in the country, has 60 Assemblymen and 25 MPs. The next general election has been widely speculated to be held between November this year and next year and the Barisan Nasional leadership is expected to consider the performance of its elected representatives, among other factors, before deciding to field them again. The BN line-up is also expected to see new faces in the coming polls. Meanwhile, it is reliably learned that all Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) incumbent State Assemblymen are expected to be fielded again in the next general election. PBS has 13 State and four parliamentary elected representatives.- That is why all elected representatives have been required to give reports on their performance to the BN leadership. But it is not immediately known whether or not all the party’s incumbent MPs will get to contest in their respective areas.

MONDAY 15/10/2007-FERRY FIRE TRAGEDY

MERSING: Choong Yoong Kim, 43, one of the victims who is still missing after the “Seagull Express” ferry caught fire seven nautical miles off Tioman Island on Saturday, managed to save his youngest son before disappearing under the water.
The victim’s sister-in-law, Wong Sook Khim, said she managed to see Chong held his son, Chong Wing Yi, 7 on board the ferry before it sank, when told that her brother-in-law was among the three victims who were still missing.
“I did not expect that this holiday, involving 20 people from our six families will result in a tragedy like this because we have been planning to holiday in Tioman for a long time. “Also, another victim, whose fate is still unknown, is my brother, Wong Soong Leng, 37,” she told reporters here today. She said other than Wing Yi, Chong still has three other children Zi Wei, 17, Wing Jian, 16 and Zi Kuan, 10.
“Wing Yi, who suffered burns to the face and hands, is undergoing treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baharu.
“Although we are in the midst of sorrow, we are hoping that Choong and Wong will be found safe,” she said. In the incident which occurred at 12.3Opm yesterday, the 20 family members from Petaling Jaya boarded the ferry for Pulau Tioman before it caught fire and sank. There were also 86 other passengers including three crew members on board. The dead were Hoo Lee Lan, 67, from Kuala Lumpur, Hong See Tiew, 53, Teh Siew Lan, 52, both from Kiang, and Tee Moi @ Haw Lee Maoi, 68, from Batu Pahat. The injured, including three women, were Lee Zsi Winn from Johor Baharu, Yong Sait Yoon from Kuala Lumpur, Ngow Lee Ling from Batu Pahat and a boy, Choong Wing Yi from Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, two eye-witnesses, crew members Zulkarnain Subahan and Asi Abdul Manaf, who helped in rescuing the passengers, said the fire started very fast. “We threw ropes and life jackets to help the victims,” Zulkarnain said. He said the tragedy was the first in his eight years as a crew member of the ferry.

SUNDAY-14/10/2007-FIRE IN MENGKABUNG WATER VILLAGE

KOTA KINABALU: It was a bleak Raya for 50 people at Mengkabung Water Village in Tuaran after they were made homeless in a fire yesterday morning. The fire broke out at around 8.3Oam when most of the occupants of the eight affected houses were out for Raya prayers. Four fire engines were rushed to the scene half an hour after receiving a distress call from villagers, but the low tide and broken water pipes made it difficult for the firemen to put out the blaze fast. One of the fire victims, Dulim Binutu, said he could not grab anything but a shirt and the pants he was wearing as the fire spread so fast. His wife Besuna Lasin also grabbed just two pieces of her clothing before fleeing their house. All our money, about RM2,000, went up in smoke. We have been saving the RM150.00 welfare assistance scheme for so long and was hoping to use the money during rainy days, now everything is gone,” said Dulim. He however was thankful that his wife is safe. As for Jamilin Toh and elder sister Raya, their plan to enjoy the Raya holidays were destroyed within seconds before their very eyes. “All those preparations for Raya celebration is gone; this is the worst Raya ever,”said Jamilin, adding that documents such as birth and marriage certificates, and . bank books, among others, were destroyed
The Fire and Rescue Services Deparment managed to put the fire under control within an hour and put it off completely in two hours.

SATURDAY-13/10/2007-ORANG UTAN,SNAKES AND BIRDS TO TRAIN TO ENTERTAIN

KOTA KINABALU: The Lok Kawi Wildife Park near here is all abuzz with daily training lessons now given to its animals, and it is open to the public.
A handful of birds, orang utans and snakes are now being trained to prepare them for daily shows at a special stage within the ‘park.
The Wildlife Department is now targeting to prepare the animals to take centre stage by mid November for simple half hour shows to provide added attraction at the park.
For now however the public are invited to watch the daily “interactive” training sessions which include getting the animals used to the presence of large audiences. A consultant company, Wild Concepts International, is overlooking the preparation of the animals for the presentations which include birds of prey swooping over the heads of the audiences and orang utans peeling coconut husks. Its manager Shamima Rafi who oversees the training programme said all the animals were “auditioned” within the park itself based on their potentials as performers.
“At the same time we are also helping the park staff to handle the animals for such shows,” she said, adding thus far among the key performers are a couple of hornbills, a brahminy kite and rufus belied eagle along with two orang utans and two parrots.
“Once we start the daily presentations it will be in the morning and afternoon. What we are doing now is to train them according to the fixed time which are normally during their meals,” Shamima said. Yesterday, for instance a group from Universiti Malaysia Sabah was hosted to one such session where they got to see raptors, parrots and the orang utans strut their stuff. “Some of the birds and the animals are not exactly ready yet particularly when it comes to performing before a crowd, hence the reason why we prefer if there are people around them when they are being trained,”She added -

KOTAKINABALU: The MVDoulos officially opened its bookstore to the public in a simple but meaningful ceremony on board the world’s largest floating library at the Kota Kinabalu port last night.
The ship, first commissioned into service as a cargo transport in 1914, will be open to the public for the next
two weeks until it departs on Oct 26. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan, when officially opening the bookstore, said the Doulos and its 350-strong international volunteer crew is a welcome reprieve for a world scarred with strife and conflict.
The world has gone through many chállenges, particularly in the search for peace, and the governments of the world are doing their best in the negotiation for peace in the midst of terrorism activities” he said in his address.
“But in the middle of. these challenges and crises, and on the basis of knowledge being power, there are people going around the world in various capacities and transports to promote peace, lifelong education and protection of the environment.”
Pairin commended the contributions and sacrifices of the volunteers on the Doulos, which is a melting pot of world cultures and beacon of international understanding.
“Volunteers sacrifice a lot to contribute towards peace and brotherhood, and for that reason, again I would like to salute Doulos and the people on board,” he said.
The Doulos, or slave in Greek, is the vessel’s fourth incarnation after it was purchased by German charity “Gute Bucher fur Alle” (Good books for All) in 1977.
Built just two years after the construction of the ill-fated Titanic, the Doulos has visited over 100 countries and more than 500 ports since 1978.
Its library holds more than 6,000 titles, including over 200 new Malay books, and has had over 18 million visitors in its travels..
This is the vessel’s fifth visit to Kota Kinabalu after it last came in eight years ago in 1999. This visit however is also expected to be its last as it is scheduled to be retired from service in 2010.
The bookstore is open Monday to Saturday from lOam to 10pm and on Sunday and the 22nd (Monday) from
2pm to 10pm. There will also be various cultural and educational programmes such as the Discover Dou1os on the 13th, 14th, 15th, 19th and 21st and cultural performances on the 14th and the 21st.

KOTA KINABALU: ‘Balik kampung’ is the best way to celebrate Hari Raya for most of the people residing in the city and towns as it is merrier. For Puan Sri Hajah Halimah Gingson, a Dusun, she will be celebrating Adilfiltri at Kampung Lingkudau in Ranau. “When we hear the song ‘Selamat Hari Raya’ and see the lighting of fireworks, we would get even more excited,” says Halimah who is staying at Jalan Istana here. “I will meet all my relatives, cousins and my grandchildren at a special gathering where we will make cakes and cook food ourselves,” adds Halimah who will have a moderate celebration this year. As for Rina Gintal, every Hari Raya is a valuable moment as it is an opportunity to ask for forgiveness from parents, members of the family, relatives and friends. “If they pardon us, then it is a belief that we have no sins towards them anymore, that is if we did have in the past,” she said. “I live in Bakti Ikhlas, Likas but I will also return to my village in Ranau to celebrate this Hari Raya. Normally, the kampung environment is merrier as we meet our family, relatives and friends.
“Actually, I miss my sister and her family who are living in Kuala Lumpur. They could sing very good karaoke Hari Raya songs. When we were young, we would sing together happily! I hope they would come home for the Hari Raya, says the 48-year- old single mother. Rina’s best friend, Halina Molison, a bank staff from Kampung Pinawantai Kudat, Chipped in, “I would be very busy visiting my Muslim relatives and friends because they would serve all kinds of delicious food and invite everyone to their open house. “I sympathize with those who will be on duty during Raya and those who have been struck by natural disasters like fire,” says Halina who resides in Putrajaya, Jalan Tuaran.
Siti Gintal, a former typist with a local newspaper and now runs a retail business in Ranau, is also hoping that her sister Nurmillah and family in Kuala Lumpur can join her for Hari Raya.
As for Sri Nor Sherafie Izuan Abu Bakar, 22, an employee of a cafe at Warisan Square, she hoped to visit her grandparents at Kampung Kadazan Baru in Kunak if she could get a bus or air ticket.
“Even though I was born in Kota Kinabalu and studied and work here, I feel more comfortable and happier to spend Raya in the kampung as it is merrier there. Besides enjoying the traditional food, I will also be able to visit my relatives and friends,” she says.
Her 24-year-old sister, Nur Sri Daiyana, agrees with her.
“I have been studying in Sarawak and I would return to my kampung every Hari Raya as the village environment is merrier,” she says.
Nur Ain bte Monili, a 22 -year-old student of the Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara, Kinarut, cannot wait to see her
parents in Lahad Datu and ask for forgiveness from them. “I miss them so much as well as members of my family. “I live in Kampung Muhibah and I am the eldest in my family of nine. No matter what, I always hope that I would be with my family every Hari Raya,” says Nur Ain who was waiting for her aunt to pick her up in front of a shopping outlet in Segama here. Herbal drinks seller Kamisah binti Amjah, 56, is having a moderate
celebration this year at Kampung Indah in Tuaran. She will make and cook special food for her visitors like
rendang, ketupat and curry. “I do not buy new clothes, just simple things to decorate my house to cheer up my family and relatives,” says Kamisah who is staying at Kampung Ketiau, Putãtan.
Dayang Maslindah Jali, 25, a staffof Commercial Service Centre at Kampung Air here was looking forward to have her friends visiting her house in Menggatal.
Also joining the balik kampong rush were homemaker Marlita bte Jamain 25,and her fisherman husband Razim Ahmad, 29.
“I always look forward to Hari Raya as I would have the chance to see members of my family and ask forgiveness. You know, when we ‘ young, we did not fully understand the meaning of Hari Raya,” Marlita says when met while shopping Kampung Air here.
Razim Ahmad, 29, chipped in, (My wife’s family is in Membakut and are collecting some cakes for them some clothes for our five kids! I know they will be very happy to see new beautiful clothes.”
Johana Liau, 20, a promoter for a shopping outlet here, said, “Even though I am not a Muslim, I also want to enjoy this Hari Raya. I am taking two days leave so that I could visit all my Muslim friends at my kampung in Kota Belud, have fun and eat all kinds of delicious food!
“The supermarket here has been busy these few days, especially from 5pm to 9pm. Although, it
close at 9pm, we extend 9.45pm and sometimes later due to many visitors ... but I love the excitement!

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is just around the corner and customarily, all Malaysians will celebrate this auspicious day,with their loved ones; their parents, family, relatives and friends. Most city dwellers will be traveling back to their respective home towns for this occasion. Our non-muslim friends will also make the most of this break by traveling back home or by going for vacations to various destinations around the country.

‘Various road safety interventions and initiatives ha been planned and undertaken by the Government to ensure safety of react users during this festive period. However, the effectiveness and success of all these initiatives depend heavily on all of us as road users. Success of Government efforts is only possible when all road users cooperate with the Government and obey traffic rules for the sake of safety.




Therefore. I would like to appeal to all Malaysians to be courteous at all times, obey traffic regulations and make every effort to avoid accidents. Accidents can indeed happen to anyone, be it to ourselves or our loved ones. Regardless of who’s at fault, accidents always leave a tragic impact, affecting the fate and future of those Involved. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Friday 12/10/2007 - Father Julius to head Sandakan diocese

SANDAKAN: Father Julius Dusin Gitom will head the new diocese of Sandakan, which has a Catholic
population of 64,000.

The Episcopal ordination and installation is set on Monday, October 15 at 9am at St Mary’s Church in Jalan Puncak.




Pope Benedict erected the Sandakan diocese on July 16 and appointed Father Julius as its first bishop.

The Catholic Church in Sabah now comprises the three dioceses of Keningau, Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan, all suffragans of Kuching archdiocese in the neighboring state of Sarawak.

Fifty year-old Bishop-elect Julius Dusin Gitom was ordained a priest on November 19, 1989. He served in the parishes of Keningau, Lahad Datu, Penampang, Sook and Tuaran from 1989 to 1995.

He went for further studies at Pontifical Lateran University in Rome from 1995 to 2000 where he obtained Licentiate in moral theology and Masters Degree in spirituality theology at Pontifical University of St
Thomas Aquinas.

Bishop-elect Gitom was a lecturer on spirituality at St Peter’s College in Kuching from 2000 to 2003 before attending a Licentiate course in Canon Law at University of Santo Tomas, Manila from 2004 to 2007.

SANDAKAN: The Rotary Club of Sandakan is organizing English Workshops from mid November to mid December this year.

“It has been two years since the Rotary Club of Sandakan organized free holiday workshops and due to popular demand, the club is holding English workshops from next month,” its president Cindy Mahsan, said.

Cindy said the workshops are catered for primary and secondary students, primary school teachers and parents with young children.

“The club will be introducing a new practical science and mathematics in English workshop for primary students in line with current educational demands. Other topics include pronunciation, common errors, public speaking, communicating with children, grammar and vocabulary writing for higher learning and communication,” she said.

According to Cindy, although the workshops are sponsored by the club, applicants are required to pay a RM20 registration fee and a RM30 material fee.

“Each participant will receive a certificate on completion of any one of the workshops. Those interested can contact the Rotary Club of Sandakan at 089-220126, she said.

They trekked through the jungle to reach the mineral-rich and active mud volcano that Tabin is renowned for, to discover the salt-lick which attracts frequent visits by wildlife, including the Borneo Pygmy elephants, Sambar deers and the illusive and highly endangered Sumatran Rhinos.





The mud is also believed to be beneficial to the skin complexion.



The young ladies later lunged into the inviting river of Tabin for a wonderdul swim, a perfect way to cool down from the heat of the forest. The girls put up at the Tabin Wildlife Resort, the exclusive jungle resort in Tabin and tried out its signature foot spa treatment, Tabin Rainforest herbal Foot Soak, made of fresh jungle herbs.

After many thousands of kilometers of traveling and expedition away from home, the foot pampering in the serene environment of Tabin was a most welcoming treat for the girls.

“This is a historic occasion not only for Dr Sheikh but also for all Malaysians. Malaysia has once again achieved a milestone by sending one of its own to explore where few have gone before” he said in a statement yesterday.




The Chief Minister said all Malaysians should be proud of this inaugural space mission by a Malaysian.

“I hope with Dr Sheikh on board this mission, it will inspire other Malaysians, especially our youths, to be visionary and learn that nothing is impossible.”

He also said the findings acquired through the experiments could lead to new discoveries and advancements in science and technology.

KOTA KINABALU; The Ministry of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, through Sabah South West Coast Single Mothers’ Association, has made this coming Hari Raya celebration more meaningful for Nora Wahab and her children.

The 33-year-old single mother from Putatan has endured a lot of difficulties in raising her two daughters since five years ago, and was delighted to receive a new home given to her as Hari Raya gift by the State Government.

‘l don’t know how to improve our life which has been quite difficult. Luckily, the Single Mother Association heard our cry and I was chosen to receive this very meaningful gift,” said Nora, who work as a general worker in a private company.

Speaking to reporters at the house presentation ceremony, Nora, who was accompanied by her daughters, lsmawati Totoh, 12, and Jumrati, 11, said it really made her sad seeing her two daughter going through hardship and poverty.

“Usually we celebrate Hari Raya in the simplest way. There are no new clothes or new things because we cannot afford to buy anything. So we just celebrate Hari Raya with whatever we have,” said Nora who had been living with her daughters in a dilapidated wooden hut.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin said Nora is the first recipient under the Charity home Programme and the Ministry will identify more individuals who really need the assistance under the programme.

“This programme will be continued and other recipient will be chosen every year. We will do what we can to try to help those in need,” he said after the presentation ceremony in Pasir Putih, Putatan yesterday.

The programme was organised by PUSPANITA Sabah in conjunction with the Head of State’s 61st Birthday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police yesterday showed and distributed copies of the closed-circuit camera (CCTV) recording to the media for circulation to the public to assist in the investigation into the murder of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, 8.

The CCTV recording had been sent to the United Slates (US) Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) forensic laboratory in Washington on Sept 27 to produce the best enhancement before being brought back on Wednesday.

Federal police Director of CID Datuk Christopher Wan Soo Kee said it was decided to circulate the recording to the public to seek information and the cooperation of individuals contained in the recording to assist in the investigation.

“We hope that anyone who knows the individuals concerned would come forward to give information and cooperation,” he said at a press conference at his office, here on Thursday.

The CCTV Image showed a man on a motorcycle carrying a blue and black coloured Diadora bag and a woman with three men in a car.



The recording at 1pm on Sept 16 showed the image of a man riding a Modenas Kriss motorcycle carrying a blue and black colored Diadora bag.



The man was seen moving around and making a telephone call at the premises at No. 31, Jalan PJS 1/48, Petaling Jaya where Nurin Jazlin’s body was found in a sports bag like the one carried by the man.



About two minutes Later, the man was seen carrying the bag from his motorcycle and leaving it beside the stairs on the ground floor of the premises before leaving the area.

One hour later, the image of a woman in a red dress who was waiting for a car beside the premises appeared in the recording.




Two minutes Later, a silver-coloured Perodua Kenari car with three men inside was seen moving towards the spot where the woman was standing.

A man wearing a striped shirt was seen getting out of the car together with a friend wearing a yellow shirt and shorts and they then left the place with the woman.

Wan said the woman who appeared in the recording looked like the woman in the photofit released on Oct 2.





“The man on the motorcycle may be different from the man in the photofit which we released,” he said.

Asked on the Indonesian woman who was released yesterday, Wan said the woman had been handed over to the Immigration Department for further action.



‘We found that the woman was only involved in the sending of short messaging service (SMS) Nurin Jazlin’s parents and Rakan Cop” he said.

Police on Wednesday. released the Indonesian woman who was believed to be involved in Nurin Jazlin’s murder as there was no concrete evidence to charge her in court.

When asked on the photographs of the post mortem on Nurin Jazlin’s remains which ,were circulated in the internet, Wan said police were investigating the matter.

“If there are hospital staff who did it, we will investigate.

“I call on those who received the photographs not to circulate them. Please respect the parents of the victim,” he added.

Part of effort to enhance US diplomatic relations

KOTA KINAHALU: Eleven US Navy personnel from the USS Reuben James destroyer yesterday joined the local volunteers in a gotong royong and breaking of fast in Likas.

The sailors, who are on a goodwill visit to Sabah, braved smelly mud along the Likas River to collect all sorts of rubbish with Karambunai Assemblywoman Jainab Ahmad, Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu, reserve cadets from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), members of DBKK’s City Friends and staff and some 50 residents.

This is part of our effort to enhance US diplomatic relations. It is also a good exposure for the crew members. They get to experience different culture, environment, foods and so on, said Ensign Greg Miller who led the sailors.

“Besides, doing community service is part of the navy’s charity work at each port we are stopping over,” he said.

“We are very honoured to be welcomed to your port and we hope that every US Navy ship that comes this way would carry out similar community service.”

According to Miller, sonic of the sailors have gone to climb the Mount Kinabalu while others to see the proboscis monkeys in Sukau, do whitewater rafting in Padas River and visit nearby islands here.

He said their charity work would include giving a donation to the Don Bosco Home at Bundu Tuhan, Kundasang, later this week.

Miller said the USS Reuben James which berths at the Kota Kinabalu Port since Monday is also taking
part in a humanitarian mission under a programme called Project Handclasp.

He said donations collected in America are used to buy medicines and other useful items distribution in foreign countries during the goodwill visits.

“So when we berth in a certain country, we visit places like schools and hand out medicines and hygiene products,” he said.

Jainab, meanwhile, said it is about time that Sabahans respond to calls and make cleanliness as a way of life.

She said it Americans could come all the way from the US to help out in the gotong-royong, there is no reason why people in Sabah could not do the same or at least maintain cleanliness in their respective homes and areas.

“Parents ought to teach their children the value of cleanliness because the children are the back-up leaders of the nation.

“This is for their own good since cleanliness practice leads to better health and nicer environment besides instilling a sense of discipline in their lives,” he said.

Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu community service director Andrew Chong said the gotong-royong yesterday was part of a larger community service project involving recycling at Kampung Likas.

He said it is part of the efforts to raise awareness among the residents of the village on cleanliness.

“This effort is a continuous project. Our upcoming events include a colouring contest for schoolchildren, compost-making session for housewives, construction of riverine rubbish traps and competition for the most collected recyclables” he said.

He said the club is inviting corporations or individuals in the area to participate in the programme.

Also present were Rotary Club KR President James Jupinon and DBKK’s Township Liaison representative for Kg Likas, Mohammad lskandar Shah Ali.
